DENVER (KDVR) — The Morocco earthquake brought together local worshippers of the Denver Islamic Society on Monday as part of the "breaking of the fast," where they remembered those affected by the devastating temblor.The Morocco earthquake has claimed the lives of more than 2,800 people as rescuers race to find survivors.“We even have family members that live in Casablanca. They felt the shaking of the buildings. Some of them stayed out until 3 or 4 in the morning before they went back home,” said Youssef Marrakchi, who came to Denver as a teenager in the '90s.“The buildings are basically brick and mud,” said Marrakchi, referencing the structures in hard-hit Marrakech and the Atlas Mountain Range. A motorcyclist who attempted to run away from an officer ended up smashing his vehicle into a South Florida restaurant.Newly released body camera footage exclusively obtained by 7News showed a messy, bloody and lawless night on Ocean Drive. According to police, on July 10, Jose Luis Otero carried out a crime spree when he sped off during a traffic stop and crashed into the Katina Restaurant, located at 834 Ocean Drive in Miami Beach. “He might’ve injured a few people,” said an officer. Police said that two tourists and a waitress received minor injuries from the crash. The incident started near Eighth Street and Ocean Drive when an officer spotted a man as he revved up his bike near pedestrians. A state of emergency has been declared in Leominster and a flash flood emergency is in place for the surrounding area as heavy rains continue to batter the region. The flash flood emergency as of around 9 p.m. included Leominster, Fitchburg, Lunenburg, Princeton and Sterling. Dozens of people arrived at Francis Drake Elementary School in Leominster Monday night after the city opened the school as an emergency shelter for people forced out of their homes by flooding.School officials announced early Monday evening that there would be no classes in Leominster public schools on Tuesday. By 10:30 p.m., approximately 30 people had arrived at the Francis Drake School. Officials said most if not all of the people already at Francis Drake had been evacuated from the Meadowbrook Acres mobile home community, where 7NEWS cameras previously captured video of crews pulling residents on rafts away from their flooded homes. In a dire warning, the National Weather Service posted alerts for “life threatening flash flooding” in the Leominster, Fitchburg Monday night.The weather service says the warning is for “flash flooding of creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses.”A portion of Route 2 was closed in the area as the rains kept coming.The NWS added other towns nearby were also under the alert, including Westford, Gardner, Holden, Clinton, Athol, Pepperell, Tyngsborough, Groton, Winchendon, Lunenburg, Townsend, Littleton, Lancaster, Templeton, Rutland, Sterling, Ayer andWestminster.The Weather Service added: “Turn around, don’t drown when encountering flooded roads. BEIJING (AP) — Rainstorms battering southern China have killed at least seven people and allowed dozens of crocodiles to escape from a farm.Nearby residents were advised to stay at home after more than 70 crocodiles reportedly escaped in Maoming, a city near the coast in western Guangdong province, according to Chinese media reports.An emergency official was quoted as saying that 69 adult crocodiles and six juveniles had escaped. Some have been captured, but the operation was difficult because of the depth of a lake they are in, the media reports said.No injuries have been reported.
