Boston Amateur Basketball Club back in session QUINCY – As the state crowned new high school hoops champions this weekend, it was the perfect time to fire up the 46th season of the Boston Amateur Basketball Club. The BABC kickoff showcase at the Hale Family YMCA was a three-game sweep that featured BABC 11th graders taking on the NJCAA Region 21 All-Stars and the MIAA All-Seniors in a doubleheader, along with 10th graders taking on MIAA underclassmen. In the opener, BABC 11th graders jumped to a 20-8 lead en route to a 100-79 victory as the team never trailed despite only six available players able to suit up.A 59-33 halftime lead quickly evaporated as the NJCAA squad’s Tony Palavra (Quincy College) hit four of his five three-pointers. The Quincy Granite sophomore trio of Palavra, Derek Williams, and Tyler Victor cut the lead to 12 midway through the second half. But long-time BABC leader and head coach Leo Papile calmed the waters.“The 40-minute game had an effect,” said Papile. “We were happy with our effort and execution, ...

MBTA Green Line speed restrictions remain in place after T identifies possible ‘multiple defects’ It was still slow going on the Green Line over the weekend, as the speed restrictions remained in place after the T identified potential “multiple defects” on parts of the track. The MBTA had been optimistic they’d be able to lift the 25 mph-cap speed restrictions on Saturday, but that plan was derailed for the perpetually maligned state agency.“Speed restriction of 10-25 mph remains in place on Green Line from end-to-end,” the MBTA tweeted on Sunday, as green-clad paradegoers flocked to the city for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. “T has identified portions of track which may include multiple defects that need to be investigated or mitigated.“As each defect is validated and corrected as needed, that track portion will be able to have the speed restriction lifted,” the MBTA added. “Speed restrictions are in place for the safety of employees and customers.”On Saturday, the MBTA said the T had identified 30 speed limit sig...

Wareham dominant in Div. 4 state boys basketball title game LOWELL — In Sunday’s Div. 4 boys basketball state final, Wareham was everywhere it wanted to be, from start to finish, against Springfield International Charter. The Vikings (22-3) never trailed, dominating on offense, defense, and the boards throughout a 66-40 victory.“Their energy and effort, they just fly around on defense,” Wareham coach Steve Faniel said. “But really our key for today was rebounding. (Springfield) had a big size advantage. … we haven’t had a problem getting stops and getting people to miss shots all season long. We have had a problem sometimes rebounding and getting out on the break. The most important part of our defense was getting on the glass.”No one for Wareham was bigger than junior Antoine Crosson, who pulled down 16 rebounds and scored 14 points. The leading scorer was Ajay Lopes, with 20 points. Aaron Cote added eight points, and Jayce Travers had six points on two 3-pointers.Springfield (23-3) was led by Kenny ...

South Boston’s St. Patrick’s day breakfast serves up barbs for the departed

South Boston’s St. Patrick’s day breakfast serves up barbs for the departed Potatoes weren’t the only things roasted for breakfast in South Boston Sunday, when the state’s senior U.S. senator used her time at the microphone to tell everyone in an overcrowded room exactly what she thought about spending the morning with them.“Daylight savings was last weekend, we lost an hour; now we’re about to lose the next three hours,” U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren cracked during state Sen. Nick Collins’ St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast in Boston. This year’s irreverent breakfast, an annual tradition which brings together many of the state’s elected officials for hours of ribbing over pastries and eggs, was less a roast of those present than it was an opportunity for the politicians that remain in the state to make fun of those who have left for, shall we say, “greener pastures.”“Everyone’s favorite punching bag, Charlie Baker, isn’t here. What jokes are even worth saying anymore without him being here?” state Senate Pres. Karen Spilka said. “I...

Josh Iby’s last-minute goal gives Pope Francis first Div. 1 state hockey title Josh Iby’s trusty skating may not have held up amid a celebratory dash-turned-slide toward the Pope Francis student section Sunday afternoon, but in the biggest moment of his career just seconds prior, his trusty stick most certainly did. With just 25.6 seconds left to go in a tied Div. 1 state final matchup at TD Garden, Iby’s finish at the post separated the No. 4 Cardinals enough from No. 7 Xaverian to secure the state title via a 3-2 win. The turtle-shell slide toward the glass right after only added to the emotion and personality that poured from that corner of the ice, all but finishing off a title game the program never got to play back in a co-championship, 2019-2020 season.Xaverian’s Cole Pouliot-Porter (28 saves) delivered a title-worthy performance in net opposite another quality game from Nick Ritchie (16 saves), but it wasn’t enough to prevent Iby from scoring two goals en route to the championship. It was a thrilling ending suited for a thrilling game, adding to a story...

Gavin Newsom to address the state’s homelessness crisis. Newsom announced Sunday that he will ask allies in the Democratic-controlled Legislature for a measure on the 2024 ballot to authorize funding to build residential facilities where up to 12,000 people a year could live and be treated. The plan is the latest by the governor who took office in 2019 vowing to own the issue of homelessness in a state where an estimated 171,000 were unhoused last year. The governor called the plan the next step in how California expands services for unhoused people, especially those with psychological and substance use disorders. “We have to address and come to grips with the reality of mental health in this state and our nation.
