“We all fail, at times. And it’s more about how you deal with failure than the failure itself.”Those were James Paxton’s words on Saturday evening, after an uncharacteristically rough start culminated in a frustrating loss.On Sunday, the Red Sox bounced back in a big way, wrapping up their weekend at Wrigley with a commanding 11-5 victory and series win, and proving once again that they’re more than their place in the division standings. After struggling in all aspects the day before, the Boston ball club fired on all cylinders in the series finale. Kutter Crawford pitched six scoreless innings, striking out nine Cubs and holding the home team to one hit, four walks, a hit batsman, while the Boston bats tallied three walks and 14 hits, including multi-hit performances by Rob Refsnyder, Rafael Devers, Masataka Yoshida, Jorge Alfaro, and Yu Chang.Despite what the final score suggests, this was anyone’s game until the fifth inning. DENVER — Gerrit Cole made Yankees history on Sunday, but the Rockies spoiled the afternoon and the Bombers’ shot at starting the second half with a series win with several homers.C.J. Cron’s grand slam in the eighth came off Clay Holmes, who inherited a mess from Tommy Kahnle. The blow helped the basement-dwelling Rockies secure an 8-7 win over the Yankees, who are now at the bottom of the American League East again. The Yankees tied things up in the ninth thanks to a Ryan McMahon throwing error and a Harrison Bader sac fly, but Oswald Peraza got thrown out trying to take third on the latter play, which ended the Yankees’ rally. The 10th inning featured more bad base running from the Yankees, as Bader, the automatic runner on second base, got thrown out at third following a chopper to the mound.A few RBI singles from Oswaldo Cabrera and Peraza helped the Yankees retake the lead in the 11th, but Nolan Jones then blasted a two-run homer off Nick Ramirez. After his start Saturday, Kyle Gibson praised the Orioles’ ability to come back in games after they rallied to beat the Miami Marlins after trailing by four runs in the second inning.Baltimore’s bats made sure early Sunday no comeback would be needed, and starting pitcher Kyle Bradish wouldn’t have needed one anyway. The Orioles scored three runs before recording an out, Bradish pitched 7 1/3 shutout innings and the bullpen barely held on in the ninth in Baltimore’s 5-4 win over the Marlins. The triumph completes the series sweep of a Marlins team that arrived in Baltimore with the National League’s second-best record. The sweep is the Orioles’ sixth this season. They are the only team in the majors yet to be swept this year , with the most recent one in May 2022 before Adley Rutschman’s MLB debut. The Orioles, owners of the American League’s second-best record at 57-35, have won a season-high eight games in a row, topping a seven-game ...Yankees Notebook: Josh Donaldson lands on 10-day IL with right calf strain, Oswald Peraza recalled

DENVER — Aaron Boone didn’t sound optimistic after Josh Donaldson hobbled down the first base line in the seventh inning of the Yankees’ Saturday win over the Rockies. On Sunday morning, the team placed Donaldson on the 10-day injured list with a right calf strain. Prospect Oswald Peraza was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to replace Donaldson. The Yankees didn’t have Donaldson’s MRI results when Boone spoke to reporters on Sunday morning, but the manager said “I would think” the third baseman will need more than 10 days on the IL.“We’ll see at what level and then go from there,” Boone said, “but I know it wasn’t great.”Donaldson, who was “a little beat up” prior to the All-Star break and designated hitting for the second consecutive day on Saturday, moved slowly out of the box after hitting a weak groundball to shortstop on Saturday. A small tornado touched down in a central Massachusetts community but caused no injuries during a wild day of weather as forecasters say Sunday’s super-soaker storms should clear to start the work week.According to the National Weather Service, sometime around 11 a.m. a tornado was spotted by several eyewitnesses though none reported seeing the “funnel” that comes along with severe storms.“We can confirm an EF-0 tornado in North Brookfield, MA. (Two) mile path length. Only damage to trees in the area. Occurred just before 11 a.m.,” the National Weather Service said via Twitter.Push-messages delivering dire warnings of impending twisters woke many residents across the state Sunday morning,“Tornado warning in this area,” cell phones across the Merrimack Valley and elsewhere screamed after 8 a.m. “Take shelter now in a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building.”Despite the seemingly saturated wrath of Mother Nature, the warning was canceled...Mets Notebook: Omar Narvaez takes place of Francisco Alvarez in series finale vs. Dodgers

Saturday night after the Mets fell to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the manager informed catcher Omar Narvaez that he would be in the lineup for Sunday’s series finale. Francisco Alvarez has turned an ankle rounding first base and though he remained in the game, the Mets thought it best to give their rookie sensation a break. It marked only the second time in the month of July the catcher had been written into the starting lineup and only the 11th time since he returned from a calf strain in early June.“I could have [played Alvarez] with the off day tomorrow,” said manager Buck Showalter. “But it was as much Omar’s needs as Francisco’s needs.”Narvaez needs playing time to be able to establish consistency at the plate and to establish consistency with the pitching staff. But the club isn’t worried about the 31-year-old backstop. He understands that his job right now is to help support the development of Alvarez and play when needed. The team ...Latest news
