Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 23:07:10 GMT

The week ahead will have temps well above normal to start the week—and well below normal by the end of the week. Our stretch of summer-like weather continues today around Chicago and into the first several days of October. Normal high temps are in the upper 60s for the first part of this month. Wednesday looks to be the transition day towards soggier weather. Timing-wise, I think we'll still end up in the low 80s but clouds fill our skies by the afternoon and some late-day showers/t'storms are possible.Blustery and cooler with temps back towards normal on Thursday along with some rain and possible iso. t'storms. Lingering showers on Friday and it could be the start of a some much cooler than normal temperatures. If we end up hitting only 59 degrees-- it'll be our coolest afternoon since May 3rd. WGN weekly climate report: Hellooooo October! The tenth month of the year for Chicagoland comes with many many changes. We'll get those in a moment—but first we'll look back at Septembe...

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 23:07:10 GMT

Employees at Kaiser Permanente could begin striking as soon as this Wednesday after the labor contract for 75,000 unionized health care workers with the company expired, potentially triggering the largest strike of health care workers in United States history.  “Our patients are not safe and getting the care that they deserve while we’re in the staffing crisis,” Datosha Williams, a member of SEIU-United Healthcare Workers West, told KTLA. “Us going on strike is us standing up to Kaiser executives to have them fix and address the staffing crisis.”  A spokesperson for Kaiser, however, said that progress has been made at the bargaining table and urged workers to reject all calls for a strike.  SEIU-United Healthcare Workers West announced on Sept. 14 that 98% of its members voted to approve the Oct. 4-6 strike in protest of “unfair labor practices” if an agreement was not reached before the contract expired, City News Service reported.  "There have been good discussions ...

VATICAN CITY (AP) — A few years ago, Pope Francis told the head of the main Vatican-backed Catholic women’s organization to be “brave” in pushing for change for women in the Catholic Church. Maria Lia Zervino took his advice and in 2021 wrote Francis a letter, then made it public, saying flat out that the Catholic Church owed a big debt to half of humanity and that women deserved to be at the table where church decisions are made, not as mere “ornaments” but as protagonists.Francis appears to have taken note, and this week he will open a global gathering of Catholic bishops and laypeople discussing the future of the church, where women — their voices and their votes — are taking center stage for the first time. For Zervino, who worked alongside the former Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio when both held positions in the Argentine bishops’ conference, the gathering is a watershed moment for the church and quite possibly the most consequential thing Francis will have undertake...
