With Opening Day fast approaching, Twins whittle down roster FORT MYERS, Fla. — It’s almost time for the Twins to pack up and leave Florida, and the cuts are now coming quickly. In the past 24 hours, the Twins have reassigned 11 players to minor league camp, announcing six more cuts — none of them a surprise — on Thursday afternoon. Catchers David Bañuelos and Grayson Greiner were reassigned, as were infielders Elliot Soto and Tyler White, right-hander Oliver Ortega and outfielder Ryan LaMarre. The latest round of cuts leaves the Twins with 39 active players in camp, plus another two — Royce Lewis and Chris Paddack — who are going to begin the season on the 60-day injured list. The Twins must get that number down to 26 by next week, when they open their season on March 30 in Kansas City. Two of those roster players, Jorge Polanco and Alex Kirilloff, will begin the season on the injured list. A couple more, pitchers Josh Winder and Ronny Henriquez, are working their way back from injuries and not expected to be ready to start the season. While the...

Trevor Larnach poised to break camp with Twins for first time

Trevor Larnach poised to break camp with Twins for first time FORT MYERS, Fla. — Two things have been true of the early years of Trevor Larnach’s major league career: He’s been productive when healthy and often sidelined by injury.Since debuting in 2021, Larnach has dealt with hand, groin and core muscle injuries, the last of which required surgery and cost him half of last season. After groin tightness affected him for a few days this spring, Larnach is feeling good and locked in at the plate. He has hit .385 with a 1.256 OPS and three home runs, going 4 for 4 on Wednesday and falling a triple shy of the cycle. With Alex Kirilloff and Jorge Polanco set to begin the season on the injured list, the outfielder is poised to begin the season on the major league roster.“My goal is to not worry about whether or not I make it (because) guys are injured,” Larnach said. “My goal is to make it from me putting in the work.”And it appears he will.Larnach spent his offseason working with specialists, recovering from the core muscle surgery that ended his 20...

Spring flood potential remains high, but slow melt is helping With Minnesota’s snow banks still intact, state weather officials warn that there’s a good chance of reaching moderate or major flood levels in some river cities this spring.Stillwater now has a 80 percent chance of seeing major flooding — up from last week’s 70 percent, according to numbers released Thursday by the National Weather Service. At the Robert Street bridge in St. Paul, the Mississippi River has an almost 50 percent chance of reaching “major flood stage.”Fortunately, the 7-to-10-day temperature and precipitation pattern is favorable for a slow melting period through the end of March, said Craig Schmidt, senior service hydrologist for the National Weather Service in Chanhassen.“Next week, we’re in really good shape, but the models are hinting at some rain around April 1, so we’re keeping an eye on that just in case,” he said.Weather Service officials are keeping an especially close eye on the St. Croix, he said. “They definitely have a higher threat,” Sc...
