Lawmakers weigh removing abortion language from Missouri bill extending postpartum care Missouri legislators heard testimony Tuesday night urging them to remove an anti-abortion provision from a bill that seeks to extend postpartum Medicaid coverage out of concern it could put federal approval at risk. The House Committee on General Laws heard a bill passed out of the Senate in February that would extend postpartum Medicaid coverage from 60 days to one year in an effort to lower Missouri’s maternal mortality rate. The Department of Social Services estimates it would cover upwards of 4,000 people who otherwise go uninsured two months after the end of pregnancy. Missouri had the 12th highest maternal mortality in the nation from 2018 to 2020, and three-quarters of pregnancy-related deaths in the state were preventable, the Missouri Pregnancy Associated Mortality Review Board found last year. But the Senate added language stating that no one who “knowingly receives services that are in violation of state law” can receive the coverage — which supporters said was designe...

Bo Byram is unhindered in Avalanche’s system and still just getting started: “I’ve just been trying to shoot the puck more.” As teammates wished Kurtis MacDermid a happy birthday in the Avalanche practice facility locker room March 25, Bo Byram piped in. With a mischievous grin, he implored reporters in the room to shower MacDermid with attention, making sure to point out the enforcer’s age. MacDermid was turning 29.A week later as Jack Johnson reached his 1,100th career game and was asked the secret to his longevity, Byram interrupted from his stall: “Hanging out with young guys.”The reminders are constant that Byram is still only 21 years old, even as the Avalanche defenseman makes that harder to believe on a nightly basis. Byram is unhindered right now, and he’s becoming increasingly unleashed.Already one of the most talented players on a stacked Colorado roster, he has the green light from coaches and from the team’s structure to be as assertive as he wants offensively. He built trust with a steady, reliable 20-game playoff resume last year: no goals but nine assists, a l...

Westside knew the city had struck a deal to purchase the land for a regional park. And still, Westside paid an undisclosed amount to buy the right-of-first refusal and then paid $24 million for the land.In other words, Andy Klein and his partners and investors forced Denver to play a game with them, knowing they were underdogs, and now are playing the role of poor loser in dramatic fashion, telling Westword they will consider putting a Topgolf ...
