LONDON — Unelected Boris Johnson aide Dominic Cummings acted like he was the prime minister “in all but name,” a senior Conservative told Britain’s COVID-19 inquiry.Sajid Javid — who served as both chancellor and later health secretary under Johnson — said in evidence to the inquiry that then-prime minister was “largely content” to let his most senior adviser run the country as the coronavirus pandemic hit the U.K.The Conservative MP quit as chancellor under Johnson in February 2020, as the crisis began to escalate. It followed major tensions between Johnson’s Cummings-led No. 10 Downing Street operation and Javid’s Treasury. In a statement which was read out at the inquiry — which is looking for lessons learned from the government’s response to the pandemic — Javid said that during his time as chancellor, Cummings “sought to act as the prime minister in all but name,” and “tried to make all key decisions within No 10 — not the prime minister.”“I felt that the...

Here’s what you need to know from the latest session in POLITICO’s weekly run-through.What they sparred about: A bumper week for the speech writers … and a dire week for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. But that’s enough about the Tory party.” The house went wild! That’s enough: Starme...

It’s called “Kraft NotMac&Cheese” and will soon roll out on grocery store shelves in two flavors — original and white cheddar with shells — each priced at $3.49 per box.Kraft partnered with NotCo., a company that makes plant-based foods, to create the new mac and cheese alternative, which is in response the growing hunger for “better-for-you” products from American consumers. The company is joining a growing trend: Plant-based product sales surged 19% last year to $11 billion, according to research firm NIQ.But there’s a risk for Kraft, too: Customers who have tried dairy-free alternatives sometimes don’t like the taste – and they often don’t give brands a second chance.“Curiosity is a major factor in trying plan...

Thirty-five years after the Orioles announced their arrival in Baltimore, then-Gov. William Donald Schaefer introduced a “distinguished visitor” to mark the end of a meeting that would redefine the MLB team’s relationship with the state of Maryland. The Oriole Bird came into the conference room and rallied the elected officials and bureaucrats with a chant of “O-R-I-O-L-E-S.”The occasion — final approval of a state-of-the-art, taxpayer-funded stadium in exchange for the Orioles’ long-term commitment to Baltimore — came on the heels of the painful departure a few years earlier of the NFL’s Colts.
