Soul Asylum Strips Down in Santa Monica: McCabes Guitars in Santa Monica is more than just a store, although it is a very, very good musical instrument store. They also tune and repair instruments, and offer lessons. Best of all, they regularly host acoustic concerts. On Sunday evening, one such McCabes show was headlined by Minneapolis alt-rockers Soul Asylum. After a touching set by Louisiana singer and songwriter Victoria Williams that saw her play crowd favorites “Crazy Mary” and “Frying Pan” among others, Soul Asylum’s David Pirner and Ryan Smith (who has been in the band since 2016) took to the stage. It was wonderful to see them in a relatively intimate environment, and Pirner was in a chipper mood. The singer and guitarist told one bad dad joke after another, each one generating cheerful groans from the crowd.Musically though, they were magnificent. Pirner and Smith’s chemistry is relatively fresh but tangible. The pair playfully play off of...Review: The Marvels

Disney and its Marvel Cinematic Universe has been in a bit of a slump recently. The adrenaline shot that audiences used to receive with films such as Avengers: Infinity War seem part of a bygone era that nervous execs are hoping to recapture. But after Avengers: End Game and Spider-man: Far From Home, Phase Three closed an unparalleled winning streak while Phase Four seemed to divide audiences with divisive films such as Eternals. And now in Phase Five, it seems audience fatigue for the genre has firmly set in thanks to a multitude of multiverses and a myriad of masked crusaders. It seems every studio has felt the pushback from a lethargic audience starving for original content. But can The Marvels save us from caped crusader burnout?Featuring Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) from Captain Marvel and The Avengers, Monica Rambeau from WandaVision (Teyonah Parris) and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) from Ms. Marvel, The Marvels is a female-led superhero pic directed by Nia DaCosta (Candyman) in s...Photos: Bandaloop teaches aerial dancing like its Transamerica Pyramid show
