PLAQUEMINE, La. (AP) — A fire at a Louisiana chemical plant triggered explosions that shook homes several miles away and sent flames and smoke billowing into the air, prompting emergency officials to urge a few hundred nearby residents to shelter indoors for several hours and to turn off their air conditioners.Flames erupted late Friday at Dow Chemical’s plant on the Mississippi River near Plaquemine, south of Baton Rouge. Iberville Parish officials told The Times-Picayune/The New Orleans Advocate that the fire started in an area of the plant that handles ethylene oxide, a flammable and toxic chemical. The parish’s sheriff, Bret Stassi, said no one was injured and that the company had accounted for all its workers. Residents of roughly 350 households within a half-mile (0.80 kilometers) of the plant were told to shelter inside for several hours overnight. As Dow Chemical and environmental officials monitored the air for hazardous materials, emergency officials urged shel...A new look at an old clue helps investigators arrest the man accused of Gilgo Beach murders

MASSAPEQUA PARK, N.Y. (AP) — The first find was startling: a woman’s skeletal remains cast into the dunes along a remote Long Island highway. Then came the shock. Days after that discovery in December 2010, police discovered parts of three more women nearby on a spit of sand known as Gilgo Beach. The remains of seven other people were found along several miles of the same parkway during the next few months. An 11th person, whose disappearance had spurred the initial search, was found dead by the highway in December 2011.What became known as the Gilgo Beach murders — the victims mostly young women who had been sex workers — flummoxed investigators for over a dozen years. The case endured through five police commissioners, more than 1,000 tips, countless theories and supposed conspiracies. Then a fresh review last year tied an old clue, about a pickup truck linked to a victim’s disappearance, to a new name: Rex A. Heuermann.Energized by the truck tidbit, investigators charted the call...BRITISH OPEN ’23: Facts and figures for the 151st Open

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – Samuel H. Edwards will have to pay a $2,500 fine for "packrafting" — and he can't set foot in a national park for two years, either. On Thursday, the National Park Service (NPS) announced Edwards' sentence after he was caught for the second time leading an illegal packrafting expedition through the Grand Canyon.Packrafting, an activity that combines hiking and personal rafting, is prohibited at Grand Canyon National Park unless visitors obtain specific permits for their trips, NPS said. Rafting the Grand Canyon is heavily regulated, and permits are used to control access and preserve the quality of the experience. Edwards did not have a permit, and was in a restricted area."Packrafting, or River Assisted Backcountry Travel (RABT), differs from traditional river rafting in that it is utilizing the river for short distances in order to access another route or trail," NPS said. New York (CNN) — Tesla finally built its first Cybertruck, the company tweeted Saturday, two years behind schedule. The electric car company tweeted an image of workers in hard hats surrounding the sleek Cybertruck, which it said was built at its Gigafactory near Austin, Texas.Tesla revealed the prototype for the futuristic Cybertruck in 2019, saying production would begin in late 2021. The striking prototype looked like a large metal trapezoid on wheels, its exteriors made from a stainless steel alloy. However, a demonstration of the truck’s supposedly unbreakable windows in 2019 backfired when a metal ball thrown at the windows did, in fact, break them.Tesla remained mostly silent about plans for the highly anticipated vehicle, but in 2021 announced an updated version was coming. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that the company couldn’t yet debut long-promised new vehicles, such as the Cybertruck pickup, due to supply chain issues. However, in January Tes...Looking Glass: Don’t you know that stealing is no big deal, ma’am?
