Knowledge gaps for perishable liquid food packs threaten Green Deal

Professor Fredrik Nilsson, Packaging Logistics, Faculty of Engineering, Lund UniversityPolicymakers are currently deliberating on packaging reuse targets in the proposed EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). But do they have the necessary evidence to make those decisions for all packaged products? A systematic review of 159 relevant scientific studies on packaging alternatives for perishable liquid foods[1] — milk, juices, nectars and plant-based drinks — suggests there is a clear gap in holistic impact assessment knowledge.Packaging of perishable liquid foods exists in various forms such as aseptic paper-based beverage cartons or non-aseptic solutions such as plastic or glass bottles. Each packaging solution has an impact on the quality, safety and shelf life of the food it contains. In assessing packaging solutions, efforts should be made to understand the wider context of reuse targets for perishable liquid foods, with consideration for packaging types, food securit...High school roundup/scores: Marshfield field hockey team nips Duxbury, 1-0

Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle exited Wednesday night’s 1-0 loss against the St. Louis Cardinals with left shoulder discomfort, the team said. After the game, manager Brandon Hyde described him as “day to day right now.”During a first-inning at-bat, Mountcastle grabbed his shoulder after swinging and fouling off a pitch before eventually earning a walk. He was assessed by training staff at first base, but remained in the game until the third inning, when Ramón Urías pinch hit and replaced him at first base. It marked the 12th time in his career that Urías has played first base, all this season. Later, Ryan O’Hearn played first as Urías moved to third. In the locker room Wednesday night, Mountcastle said his shoulder “popped” after his first-inning swing and that he would receive some imaging Thursday. He tried to take some batting practice swings during the game but “just definitely wasn’t ready to go.”...Son of Aung Sang Suu Kyi is worried about her health in detention and about Myanmar’s violent crisis

BANGKOK (AP) — The younger son of ousted Myanmar leader Aung Sang Suu Kyi says he has always avoided talking to the media, but this time is different. He’s increasingly worried about his imprisoned 78-year-old mother’s health and about Myanmar’s violent political crisis, which he calls desperate.“I’d just really like to have some form of contact with her so that I know that she’s OK, because at the moment she has no access to her legal counsel,” Kim Aris said Wednesday in a video interview with The Associated Press from his home in London.“She has no access to her personal doctors. She’s not allowed any visitors, as far as I’m aware. She’s not even allowed to mingle with the other prisoners, which means she’s basically under a form of solitary confinement.”Suu Kyi was arrested in 2021 when the army seized power from her democratically elected government. She has since been prosecuted and convicted on more than a dozen charges for offenses her supporters say were concocted to k...Reports show new Indonesian industrial park on Borneo, feted as ‘green,” will be powered by coal

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — A vast industrial park being built on the tropical island of Borneo that has attracted billions of dollars in foreign and domestic investment is damaging the environment in an area where endangered animals live and migrate. The showcase Indonesian project also initially will be partly powered by coal, according to an environmental impact assessment ordered by one of its developers and reviewed by The Associated Press, but not yet made available to the public. The project championed by President Jokowi Widodo reflects Indonesia’s struggle to balance profiting from its rich natural resources and meeting its environmental goals. The environmental impact assessment commissioned by PT Kalimantan Industrial Park Indonesia, which operates a large part of the current development, describes what is happening in the 15,000 hectare (32,100 acre) area, where plumes of dust mushroom into the sky along the Celebes Sea as heavy equipment fells trees and razes paddy fields. NEW YORK (AP) — The iconic stopwatch won’t be reset, but for six episodes this fall, “60 Minutes” will become 90 minutes. The CBS newsmagazine is stretching on some Sundays when CBS airs an NFL doubleheader, starting Oct. 8. Often, the show doesn’t air until 7:30 p.m. on the East Coast those nights (it usually starts at 7 p.m.).The request to Bill Owens, the show’s executive producer, came from top CBS executive George Cheeks, and predated the strikes that have paralyzed Hollywood and left networks looking for more content. Owens said he needed to weigh whether the three extra hours across the six episodes would dilute the broadcast.“My job is to protect the place,” he said. “I don’t ever want to harm a hair on the head of ‘60 Minutes.’”There will generally be two extra pieces on the 90-minute nights, and correspondents are already lobbying for more time to tell their stories. Extra producers have been brought in. Owens said the additional stories would likely...One man located with slash wounds in Danforth area

ST. LOUIS – Social media posts about barking dogs have things getting out of hand in the Tower Grove South neighborhood. The posts have drawn an outlandish response—not on social media but on a 45-foot stretch of fencing along the yard where the dogs live.“We have barking dogs,” the message reads in black paint on the wooden fence. “Dogs bark.”“I walk my dog at 5 or 6 in the morning. I just come out shaking my head like, ‘What is going on over there?’” neighbor Will Rowe said. The fence message came in response to complaints on Facebook about excessive dog barking coming from the other side of the fence in what is a very dog-friendly neighborhood. No doubt it gets loud.“It’s a bit disruptive, but I have earplugs that I put in,” one neighbor said.“I feel like it’s not intentional at all,” said another.
