The year’s most extreme weather shows what a warming planet is capable of, and what’s to come

(CNN) — In the hottest year on record, the fingerprints of a changing climate in a warming world were all over dozens of extreme weather events. There wouldn’t be weather without heat; heat is energy, and weather is an expression of that energy, of an atmosphere trying to balance itself. But too much heat in the system raises the limits of what is possible in weather and pushes it toward the extremes. So it’s maybe no surprise then that this year’s record heat was a “through line” in many of 2023’s most brutal weather events, Kristina Dahl, climate scientist with the Union of Concerned Scientists, told CNN.“Climate change influences our weather on Earth every day,” Dahl said. “In my mind, the burden of proof now is to show that climate change hasn’t influenced an event, because it’s just so clearly influencing everything around us.”The extreme weather events of this year are not unique – they’re a sign of what’s to come.“These types of events will continue to become more frequent and ...Texas is sending asylum seekers to major cities by bus with little notice. These mayors want to pump the brakes

(CNN) — Frustrated by “rogue buses” from Texas dropping off migrants by the thousands, the mayors of New York, Chicago and Denver are trying to slow the surge by requiring the bus operators to coordinate arrivals under the threat of impound, fines and even jail time.Last week, 14 busloads of migrants from Texas made their way to New York City – the highest total recorded since spring 2022, Mayor Eric Adams said, citing the city’s Asylum Seeker Arrival Center. At the direction of Texas’ Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, the Lone Star state has bused over 90,000 migrants to “sanctuary cities” run by Democrats like Washington, DC, New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, Denver and Los Angeles since April 2022, according to numbers released by the governor’s office Friday. In justifying the busing of migrants who cross the southern border, Abbott in a statement last year said “it was just Texas and Arizona that bore the brunt of all the chaos and problems that come with it.”“Now, ...David Pastrnak and Kevin Shattenkirk each score twice to lift Bruins over Devils 5-2

Timberwolves coach Chris Finch made a wise decision in the closing minutes of Saturday’s tilt at Target Center against the Los Angeles Lakers. He put the ball in the hands of Mike Conley.Where else would you want it?Minnesota’s offense stagnated at various points in the game, with Anthony Edwards dribbling the air out of the ball — with some success — and Karl-Anthony Towns simply being out of sorts. That didn’t cut it offensively for the first three and a half quarters, and it certainly wasn’t going to cut it to close out the contest. So Finch instructed the ball to go to Minnesota’s most calm, collected, smart player in Conley, who knocked down a couple key triples and set his teammates up for looks to help seal the door on Minnesota’s 106-104 victory. It didn’t come easy. Minnesota nearly combusted in the closing moments as, up seven with 30 seconds to play, Jaden McDaniels committed an inexcusable foul to give LeBron James an and...Shop Upper Madison Week to bring Pine Hills business

SAN FRANCISCO — For years, Ben Black’s phone annoyed his family. It was the only Android device in a family message group with eight iPhones. Because of him, videos and photos would arrive in low resolution and there would be green bubbles of text amid bubbles of blue. But a new app called Beeper Mini gave him the ability to change that.Black, 25, used the app to create an account for Apple’s messaging service, iMessage, with his Google Pixel phone number. For the first time, every message the family exchanged had a blue bubble and members were able to use perks like emoji and animations.Since it was introduced Dec. 5, Beeper Mini has quickly become a headache and potential antitrust problem for Apple. It has poked a hole in Apple’s messaging system, while critics say it has demonstrated how Apple bullies potential competitors.Apple was caught by surprise when Beeper Mini gave Android devices access to its modern, iPhone-only service. Less than a week after Beeper Mini’s launch...Latest news
