About 3,000 Prince George’s County, Maryland, Public School graduating seniors spent Monday morning at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie celebrating what was called “Decision Day,” a first-time event held by the county to honor the class of 2023.It was part pep rally and part career fair.Students could grab food, take a 360-degree photo with their friends, and sign banners celebrating the imminent end of their high school careers. But they could also stop and talk with representatives of the three colleges in Prince George’s County, as well as reps from the county’s Fire and EMS department and some municipal police departments. The military, trade schools and other employers were also in attendance.“It’s the first time we’ve done it, and we wanted our students to understand how important they are,” said Prince George’s County Public Schools CEO Monica Goldson. “Today we’re celebrating them before they walk across the stage in three weeks.”For some students in attendance, most o...Injuries, Kraken derail Avs’ quest for back-to-back titles

DENVER (AP) — Cale Makar remained at his locker in full uniform — skates still laced — for quite a while after the Colorado Avalanche were eliminated from the playoffs. The standout defenseman just wasn’t ready to move on from a tumultuous season filled with a rash of injuries and other quirky occurrences. The harsh reality was only beginning to settle in: Their Stanley Cup defense was over after losing in seven games in the first round to the second-year Seattle Kraken. Their summer, for as short as it was last year, figures to be a long one and brimming with hard-to-answer questions. Questions like: Can captain Gabriel Landeskog make it back after missing the season following knee surgery? What about the situation involving Valeri Nichushkin, the bruising forward who missed the last five games of the postseason for undisclosed personal reasons? And can they surround Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen with more scoring power? Especially after a series where the bottom lines couldn&...20 California condors in Arizona, Utah died from avian flu

PHOENIX (AP) — Twenty California condors in northern Arizona and southern Utah have died since March and half of the endangered birds tested positive for a strain of avian flu, according to authorities.Four condors are still receiving supportive care and have shown improvement, but wildlife officials told The Arizona Republic that they’re worried the recent outbreak could potentially spread to other condor populations. So far, authorities say, the virus hasn’t been detected in the other condor populations in California or Baja California, Mexico. The Peregrine Fund, a group that manages wild populations of the bird, estimates there are 116 wild condors flying over Arizona and Utah and occupying the landscape within Grand Canyon National Park, Zion National Park, Vermillion Cliffs National Monument, on the Kaibab Plateau and in surrounding areas. “The condor is slow to mature, taking up to eight years before they can produce young, and with an average of one young every other year, the...Toll rises from 103 to 110 in Kenya cult starvation deaths

MOMBASA, Kenya (AP) — Kenyan officials say the number of deaths linked to a cult on the country’s Indian Ocean coast has risen from 103 to 110. Heavy rains stalled the exhumation process for the third day and government pathologists began autopsies.According to the Kenyan Interior Ministry, five people have been found alive over the last two days by searches and aerial surveillance of the 50,000-acre Chakama ranch. The autopsies began a day after President William Ruto announced that his government would soon establish a judicial commission of inquiry to investigate the deaths. Opposition leader Raila Odinga said Monday that the Kenyan parliament should “establish whether the deaths … were acts of rogue pastors, human sacrifices or body-organ trade.” Leaders from the region and human-rights organizations have criticized the government’s slow pace of rescues, and its denying journalists and activists access to the forest.SourceIs it legal to own a capybara in Colorado?

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — There was a time in Paul Maurice’s coaching career when he wanted his teams to immediately move on after a big win and start thinking about the next challenge. Not now.He wanted the Florida Panthers to spend a little extra time savoring their upset of the Boston Bruins in one of the biggest NHL playoff shockers ever, figuring that will help get them ready for the next challenge. The Panthers start Round 2 of the playoffs in Toronto on Tuesday night, facing a Maple Leafs team that ousted perennial power Tampa Bay.“It’s two sides of the same coin,” Maurice said Monday from Boston, before the team flew to Toronto. “On the one half, that was as emotional a win as our franchise ever had.
