All this time, Jasson Domínguez has been tuning out the hype: ‘I was just really focused on what I was doing’

HOUSTON — The day Jasson Domínguez signed his first professional contract, the outfielder returned to his academy in the Dominican Republic and gave all his equipment away to his teammates. With a $5.1 million deal freshly inked, Domínguez, only 16 at the time, could afford new bats and gloves. Still, that act spoke to why the Yankees were willing to invest such a lump sum of money on a kid barely old enough to drive. When you’re talking about contracts that big, skills aren’t the only thing taken into consideration.“What I didn’t know the first day I saw him, but I learned over time, was that his makeup was just absolutely off the charts,” Donny Rowland, the Yankees’ director of international amateur scouting, told the Daily News. “Very humble, engaging, friendly, never wanting to attract attention to himself. When you’d give him a compliment, he would kind of give you a sheepish grin and shake his head back and forth. SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Police in New Mexico’s capital city on Friday were investigating the partial destruction of a public monument to a 19th century frontiersman and U.S. soldier who had a leading role in the death of hundreds of Native Americans during Anglo-American settlement of the American West. The monument to Christopher “Kit” Carson has been encircled by a plywood barrier for its own protection since 2020, when Santa Fe was swept by the movement to remove depictions of historical figures who mistreated Native Americans amid a national reckoning over racial injustice. The monument’s upper spire was toppled Thursday evening. Photos showed an abandoned pickup truck and cable that may have been used to inflict the damage. Last year, the monument was splattered with red paint by activists on Indigenous Peoples’ Day.Carson carried out military orders to force the surrender of the Navajo people by destroying crops, livestock and homes. Jeremy Brown in southwest Washington has been sentenced to more than 27 years in prison. Clark County Superior Court Judge David Gregerson sentenced 30-year-old Abran Raya Leon on Thursday, The Columbian reported. DES MOINES, Iowa (WHO) — For some people, Barbie is just a plastic doll, but for Iowa resident Sue Wyatt, Barbie is a collector's item — and after buying her first doll back in the 80s, she was hooked."I went back the next day and they were all gone, and when I saw that I said this is something that's going to be big," said Wyatt. But little did she know just how big her own collection would one day be."I was shocked, we had 475 that were in mint condition and never opened. It was taking over our house, our closets were full and we had 47 tubs already," said Wyatt. "They just kept coming, and I was like there's another tub, and we opened a door to a closet and there's another tub, and the closet we hadn't opened in ten years, that's because it was full of tubs so there's more barbies," said Lisa Nordin, Wyatt's daughter. Now, Sue and her family are donating their combined collection to the Ronald McDonald House in Des Moines. A house that became a temporary home to Sue after her twi...Even Jerry Reinsdorf didn't hold back on 2023 White Sox season

CHICAGO — There are some who could argue that this has been one of the more disappointing and difficult seasons in the long history of the Chicago White Sox franchise. Owner Jerry Reinsdorf would be one of those who might agree, even as he's taken a lot of the blame from fans during a tumultuous 2023 season. The 87-year-old chairman made that clear in what's a rare and brief appearance at a news conference Thursday at Guaranteed Rate Field on the occasion of the hiring of new general manager Chris Getz. He opened up his statement by expressing how bad the year has been for him, as the White Sox have endured major difficulties on and off the field."This has been my 43rd year in baseball, it's the worst year I've ever suffered through. It's been a horrible experience," said Reinsdorf. "I feel awful. I know how our fans feel."First is the performance on the field, which has seen the White Sox slip toward the bottom of Major League Baseball.
