Daniel Serafini, a former Serra High School standout and Major League pitcher, was one of two people arrested Friday in connection with a murder two years ago in the Lake Tahoe area.Serafini, 49, and Samantha Scott, 33, had been wanted in connection to the 2021 shooting death of Serafini’s father-in-law, Gary Spohr, 70, and the attempted murder of Serafini’s mother-in-law, Wendy Wood.Following a two-year investigation, the Placer County sheriff’s office said Serafini was arrested in Winnemucca, Nev., early Friday morning and Scott was apprehended in Las Vegas. By Katie Lobosco | CNNThe Internal Revenue Service has collected $160 million in back taxes this year by cracking down on millionaires who haven’t paid what they owe, the agency said Friday. The recent effort to target high-income individuals has been boosted by an increase in federal funding provided by Democrats last year through the Inflation Reduction Act. Republicans have criticized the amount of money the IRS is getting, and future funding is uncertain. In September, the IRS started seeking back taxes from about 1,600 taxpayers with income above $1 million and more than $250,000 in tax debt. So far, the IRS has closed 100 of those cases, collecting $122 million, it said Friday.Earlier this year, the IRS collected $38 million from more than 175 high-income earners. That brings the total to $160 million so far this year.“I think that the evidence that we’ve seen to date, in terms of the amount that we have recovered … points to this being a highly important effort for us,” IRS Com...Vehicle crashes into furniture store in SF's SoMa neighborhood

John Fetterman’s Former Campaign Staffers Urge Him to Support Israel-Hamas Ceasefire

Sixteen former Campaign staffers of Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., have penned a letter urging their onetime boss to back a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, telling him that “it is not too late to change your stance and stand on the righteous side of history.”The open letter comes as Fetterman, a consistent supporter of Israel, has defended its war on Gaza and is the latest effort by former or current U.S. government employees urging an end to the violence. On Thursday, Fetterman joined 35 other senators in pushing for “the swift implementation of sustained access for humanitarian aid, including water and medical supplies, to save innocent civilian lives in Gaza,” yet he has been dismissive of his congressional colleagues’ calls for a ceasefire.“Now is not the time to talk about a ceasefire,” Fetterman posted a few days after 13 House Democrats introduced a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire. “We must support Israel in efforts to eliminate the Hamas terrorists...Bears turn to Bagent; Raiders will also go with a backup QB with Garoppolo out

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Houston Astros pitcher Bryan Abreu and manager Dusty Baker were ejected from Game 5 of the AL Championship series after the reliever hit the Texas Rangers’ Adolis García with a pitch in the eighth inning Friday, triggering benches to clear two innings after the slugger’s go-ahead home run.García also was ejected by the umpires.García was irate after being hit on his upper left arm by a 98.9 mph fastball and immediately turned and got into the face of catcher Martín Maldonado. García waved his finger in Maldonado’s face while the slugger was behind pushed back by plate umpire Marvin Hudson. Both benches and bullpens cleared, with players from both sides surrounding each other at home plate. Once things settled down, umpires ejected Abreu and García. TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — No one will face criminal charges following a two-car crash in Tacoma, Washington, that killed six Arizona residents in July, according to Pierce County prosecutors.A three-month Washington State Patrol investigation into the July 15 crash at the intersection of state Route 509 and Alexander Avenue determined the Arizona residents’ vehicle ran a red light when the crash occurred, the Tacoma News Tribune reported Thursday. The crash happened about 11 a.m., when a Kia Forte sedan holding seven people drove through the intersection and was hit by an eastbound driver in a BMW SUV, according to charging decision documents. The Kia hit a curb, rolled 70 feet (21 meters) and caught fire. Five of the Kia’s occupants were declared dead at the scene, and a sixth died later at St. Joseph Medical Center. A seventh occupant — a Phoenix man — survived with serious injuries but had no memory of the crash. PARIS (AP) — Punished one week, punisher the next.New Zealand winger Mark Tele’a responded to being dropped for the Rugby World Cup quarterfinals with a powerful performance in their semifinal thrashing of Argentina on Friday.Tele’a didn’t score a point in the All Blacks’ 44-6 win, unlike fellow wing Will Jordan who scored three tries, but Tele’a was even more outstanding. His willingness to work, especially around the ruck, ability to get over the gainline and crack the Pumas defense bagged him a brilliant outing in an All Blacks career less than a year old.“Mark was strong in the close-quarter areas and defended really well,” New Zealand coach Ian Foster said.Tele’a had a point to prove after he was axed from the team last week for breaking curfew. The All Blacks weren’t willing to overlook what they called a minor breach of protocol ahead of a monumental quarterfinal with Ireland they were tipped to lose, and made a statement about their princip...Latest news
