Review: TheatreWorks delivers a mostly worthy ‘Steel Magnolias’

Review: TheatreWorks delivers a mostly worthy ‘Steel Magnolias’ The luminous Truvy and her in-home beauty parlor is awash in eye-popping pinks; it’s a local gathering spot where great hair is designed for a fee, advice dished out for free. Laughter, tears and discoveries explode as a faulty boombox adds a little sonic texture in the corner, after a slap to the plastic gets the tunes going again.TheatreWorks Silicon Valley’s production of “Steel Magnolias,” which many remember from the delightfully emotional 1989 film, has plenty going for it, including the six women who make up the quirky and merry band of characters that populate Truvy’s in-home beauty parlor in the quaint, fictional Southern hamlet of Chinquapin, Louisiana. But despite the richness of Robert Harling’s poignant and pleasing text, raising the stakes in this production would serve that text well. Some of the most critical transitions are too clunky, keeping situations mired in inconvenience mode far too long when outright conflict would send these narratives into the stratosphere....

Pac-12 football: USC, Colorado lead our final transfer portal power ratings of 2023 The Pac-12’s dizzying 2022-23 transfer cycle is coming to a close after several hundred players passed through the portal over a six-month span. Some of them did so twice. Our second and final canvassing of the upheaval led to slight changes in the Hotline’s transfer portal power ratings but no significant movement. In contrast to the state of affairs across the conference last year, the focus was less on quarterbacks and more on the lines of scrimmage. (That group accounts for more than a quarter of the total additions.) New faces at the skill positions were not nearly as head-turning as during the first offseason under Lincoln Riley, but ...

What Does the FBI Have on Hunter and Joe Biden? Earlier this month, House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer, R-Ky., announced that a document in possession of the FBI that relates to Hunter and Joe Biden “has not been disproven and is currently being used in an ongoing investigation.” In the hands of conservative media and some leading Republicans, that double negative quickly transformed into affirmative proof of a criminal bribery scheme involving the Ukrainian natural gas company that had hired Hunter while his father was vice president. The entire Swamp is doing everything they can to protect Biden, but good to see House Republicans finally forcing some accountability. https://t.co/2ECwsZnv0y— Donald Trump Jr. (@DonaldJTrumpJr) June 6, 2023The idea that the charge has been proven is preposterous, but readers looking for details on the case have little place to turn outside of the conservative news outlets that have been making such claims.
