DENVER (KDVR) — Coloradans might notice low-flying helicopters in the coming months.Colorado Parks and Wildlife biologists will be conducting wildlife research projects and population surveys, for which helicopters are a key tool, CPW said in a release Friday. Watch: Elk herd on the move near Castle Pines Wildlife researcher Nathaniel Rayl said they do this research in the winter because lower temperatures and snowfall make better conditions for capturing animals."Elk, moose, deer and pronghorn prefer cooler temperatures and are actually less stressed than if we were to capture in the summer when they may overheat and die. The deeper snow cushions the animal and helps prevent injuries, and they don't run as far, making capture easier and quicker," Rayl said. Here are some of the research plans CPW has laid out for this winter.Big-game species classificationStarting this month and lasting through February, CPW will conduct classification flights across the state for big-game species...Thief strikes sour holiday note, swipes pricey Grinch costume from North Bay Village parking lot

Pediatric pneumonia cases have been rising in the Bay State, according to health officials who say there’s “no evidence” that the seasonal jump is tied to the increase in mycoplasma pneumonia flare-ups around the world.Massachusetts has seen a modest uptick in pediatric pneumonia cases during the past few weeks, the state Department of Public Health said on Friday. This increase is “seasonally appropriate” and is in line with the levels of pneumonia typically seen at this time of year before the COVID-19 pandemic, according to DPH. These pneumonia cases are most likely linked to a combo of respiratory viruses — including respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), which normally jumps in the winter months.“We are aware of the attention to the increase in pneumonia in several geographic regions of the world that has been attributed in part to mycoplasma pneumonia,” DPH said in a statement. “There is no evidence that the normal and expected ...US proposes plan to protect the snow-dependent Canada lynx before warming shrinks its habitat

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — U.S. officials proposed a $31 million recovery plan for Canada lynx on Friday in a bid to help the snow-dependent wildcat species that scientists say could be wiped out in parts of the contiguous U.S. by the end of the century. The proposal marks a sharp turnaround from five years ago, when officials in Donald Trump’s presidency said lynx had recovered and no longer needed protection after their numbers had rebounded in some areas. President Joseph Biden’s administration in 2021 reached a legal settlement with environmental groups to retain threatened species protections for lynx that were first imposed in 2000.Populations of the medium-sized wildcats in New Hampshire, Maine and Washington state are most at risk as habitat changes reduce populations of their primary food, snowshoe hares, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service documents indicate. But declines for lynx would be seen in boreal forests across the contiguous U.S. under even the most optimistic warming scenar...Judge rejects Trump’s claim of immunity in his federal 2020 election prosecution
