Restrictions at Broadview and Danforth begin Aug. 14 to replace streetcar tracks

The City of Toronto has announced further restrictions as they will replace TTC streetcar tracks, with the next phase requiring closures at the intersection of Broadview and Danforth avenues.Beginning Aug. 14, crews will replace tracks on the north side of the intersection, which is expected to be completed by late August.During construction, only one shared eastbound lane will be available and there will be no westbound traffic on Danforth Avenue through the intersection and no southbound traffic on Broadview Avenue.One northbound lane will be open on Broadview Avenue from Gerrard Street East to Danforth Avenue and there will be a detour route for cyclists travelling westbound.After the north side of the intersection is finished work will then begin on the south side from late August through the Labour Day weekend.During this work there will be one shared eastbound and one westbound lane for motorists and cyclists on Danforth Avenue through the intersection. NIAMEY, Niger (AP) — Niger’s deposed president is running out of food and experiencing other increasingly dire conditions two weeks after he was ousted in a military coup and put under house arrest, an advisor told The Associated Press on Wednesday.President Mohamed Bazoum, the West African nation’s democratically elected leader, has been held at the presidential palace in Niamey with his wife and son since mutinous soldiers moved against him on July 26. The family is living without electricity and only has rice and canned goods left to eat, the advisor said. Bazoum remains in good health for now and will never resign, according to the advisor, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the sensitive situation with the media. A new Maru Public Opinion survey has found that despite interest rate hikes by the Bank of Canada, part of the goal to lower inflation, less Canadians are feeling anxious and worried about the five per cent it sits at today than they were last October when rates were 3.25 per cent.Fifty-two per cent of Canadians, down from 57 per cent, say the rise in interest rates over the past year, with 39 per cent (down from 36 per cent) is causing some anxiety because of money pressures. COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith said Wednesday he’ll retire next summer.The 67-year-old Smith, who has spent the past 18 years at Ohio State leading one of the largest and most successful athletic programs in the country, announced he would step down in July 2024.“I have always believed that a leader seeks to be the right person at the right time in the life of the institution,” Smith said. “I believe that July 2024 is the right time to welcome new leadership to build upon what we have achieved and continue to build upon the great tradition of excellence in athletics and business advancement at Ohio State.”Smith, a Cleveland native who played college football at Notre Dame, became Ohio State’s eighth athletic director in April 2005. KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — A Sherpa guide who climbed the world’s 14 tallest mountains in record time is eyeing another record, looking to become the youngest person to scale all those peaks twice. Tenjen Sherpa, 35, and Norwegian climber Kristin Harila, 37, shattered the record for the fastest climb of the 14 mountains more than 8,000 meters (about 26,000 feet) high when they topped Mount K2 in Pakistan late last month.
