Colorado Avalanche vs. Seattle Kraken: Series predictions, who has the edge and five things to watch in Stanley Cup Playoffs

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 23:17:03 GMT

As the Colorado Avalanche prepare to defend the Stanley Cup, a breakdown of their first-round matchup against the Seattle Kraken.Who has the edge?Forwards: The two best forwards in this series wear burgundy and blue. Nathan MacKinnon’s play of the last month is the reason this is a playoff matchup in the first place. Not only did a tight division race allow him to set career-highs with 42 goals and 111 points, but it showcased his ability to ratchet up the intensity at this time of year. He scored game-winning goals in seven (!) of the Avs’ last 15 games. But are he and Mikko Rantanen enough to overshadow Seattle’s depth? The Avs’ revolving bottom six has been their weakness all year, and the Kraken can roll out a fourth line that combined for 51 goals. Daniel Sprong, Brandon Tanev and Ryan Donato will be a two-way handful for Colorado’s checking lines. Yanni Gourde brings championship experience to the middle of the ice on the third line. Those Seattle...

Nuggets’ Jamal Murray relishes playoff return: “I’m best when I’m feeling myself.”

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 23:17:03 GMT

Back on the postseason stage for the first time in more than 900 days, Jamal Murray’s juicy postgame snack was a long time coming.Less than 30 minutes after he and the Nuggets ran the Timberwolves off the floor in Game 1, bludgeoning the visiting No. 8 seed, 109-80, Murray sat at his locker room stall devouring oranges by the slice.Once he’d polished off his replenishments, Murray pulled another move out of his bag. He joked to a nearby staffer he’d see him later, knowing full well he still had his postgame media obligations to fulfill. It was quintessential Murray: confident and brash.Murray poured in a game-high 24 points on Sunday, which felt like a significant accomplishment after making just three baskets in the first half. But his second half – 15 points, with three 3-pointers, four rebounds and four assists – looked much more like the last time he saw the postseason, when he took the league by storm and set the Bubble on fire. In addition to the scoring, Murray added eight ass...

Kiszla: These Nuggets are spicy and the T-Pups don’t have enough dawg to stay in this NBA playoff fight

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 23:17:03 GMT

Whoa, Nelly. Good gracious, these Nuggets are bodacious. They’re as spicy as serrano peppers and have punchable faces. Their quest for the first NBA championship in franchise history has only just begun, but it’s already getting hot in here.“Oh, I don’t mind spicy … I expect spicy,” Nuggets coach Michael Malone said Sunday, before Denver went out and crushed Minnesota 109-80 to open the playoffs.Hey, T-Pups. Better run home with your tail between your legs. You don’t have enough dawg to stay in this fight. What makes these Nuggets different from all the teams that have fallen short in pursuit of championship dreams is their sassy nature. Basketball is a game of beauty, but champions have a take-no-guff attitude personified by bad dudes with nicknames like Dennis “Worm” Rodman or demeanors more irritating than Draymond Green.“We’re fighting for something special,” Malone said. “And we know that to get to an NBA championship, you have to win a lot of games – 16 – against really good te...

Photos: Wet winter gives way to colorful ‘Superbloom’ in US West

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 23:17:03 GMT

By JULIE WATSON | Associated PressThe tiny rain-fed wildflowers, no bigger than a few inches, are so vivid and abundant across California this year that their hues of purple and yellow look like paint swatches from space. From the mist-shrouded San Francisco Bay Area to the Mexican border and across the deserts of Arizona, there are flashes of color popping up after an unusually wet winter helped produce a so-called “ Superbloom.”A series of powerful storms dumped record amounts of rain and snow across California, replenishing reservoirs, bringing an end — mostly — to the state’s three-year drought, and setting prime conditions for millions of dormant seeds to sprout. Botanists say wildflowers are expected to be blooming well into May, with some areas just starting.“One of the things unique about this year is how incredibly widespread it is,” said Naomi Fraga, director of conservation programs at the California Botanic Garden. “It’s pretty spectacular.”Superblooms often follow wet wi...

Top Kremlin critic convicted of treason, given 25 years

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 23:17:03 GMT

A Russian court convicted a top opposition activist of treason on Monday for publicly denouncing Moscow’s war in Ukraine and sentenced him to 25 years in prison. It was the latest move in the Kremlin’s relentless crackdown on anyone who dares to criticize the invasion.Vladimir Kara-Murza, Jr., an activist and journalist who twice survived poisonings he blamed on the Kremlin, has rejected the charges against him as punishment for standing up to Russian President Vladimir Putin and likened the proceedings to the show trials during the rule of Soviet dictator Josef Stalin. Human rights organizations and Western governments denounced the verdict, and Amnesty International declared the 41-year-old a prisoner of conscience. The charges against Kara-Murza, who has been behind bars since his arrest a year ago, stem from a March 2022 speech to the Arizona House of Representatives in which he denounced Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and other speeches abroad.Days after that invasion, the country...
